Charles Allis Art Museum: Big and Little - Paintings by Susan Diehl
Sheboygan artist Susan Diehl was trained in the Russian impressionist style. She credits that training with teaching her to know what she sees and to paint what she knows. Her scenes of beaches, flowers and landscapes capture the essence and spirit of her observations. Using color, light, shape and patterns, Diehl recreates little moments of reality.

Dean Jensen Gallery: Joan Backes - Newspaper House
An internationally prominent artist who has produced art installations in countries as distant as Thailand and Finland, Backes has created an ambitious new work just for the Dean Jensen Gallery - a human-scaled house in which visitors will find digitally projected images, dioramas, sculptures and artifacts. Backes, a Milwaukee native and now an art professor at Brown University, Providence, RI, will also be showing paintings and C-prints, most of the work commenting on the uneasy relationship between man and nature.

DeLind Gallery: Vyacheslav Pichugin
This month's featured artworks are Plein Air/Impressionist paintings of noted Russian artist Vyacheslav Pichugin. His landscape paintings offer a glimpse of his homeland in the southern Ural Mountain region of Russia. Pichugin holds the rare designation of "Honored Artist of Russia." Additionally, recent acquisitions will include a variety of artworks from around the region and the world, including two small bronze sculptures by America's most important sculptor, the late Frederick Hart.

Katie Musolff will be showing a wide array of drawings that she's completed over the last year. It was a process of getting back to basics, exploring mixed media and observing everything around her. The exhibit will also feature new paintings that have been influenced by this exercise. In addition, Katie will be executing a painting in the gallery over the length of the exhibit and viewers will have a weekly opportunity to see the process in person. Opening Friday, October 17 - 11am to 9pm. Reception for the artist Saturday, October 18, 1pm to 3:30pm. Exhibition open through November 22.

A vintage poster exhibit includes a wide variety of American and European advertising posters from the 1880s through the 1980s by artists such as Cappiello, Cheret and Villemot. From classic champagne ads to kitschy Keds ads, these posters inspire a sense of nostalgia. Our As Time Goes By exhibition will also include antique sculpture and vintage lighting.

Peltz Gallery: The Return of the Men
In memory of James Auer, Peltz Gallery brings "The Return of the Men" show to October Gallery Night. While viewing the annual "Remarkable Women" show, Jim strongly suggested that men could be remarkable too. The show features paintings, small sculptures, drawings and original prints by more than 30 contemporary male artists. We include photographs by James Auer, small sculpture by Kehinde Wiley, works by Christo, Colescott, Cottingham, Dine, Fischl, Gilliam, Gruenwald, Haas, Himmelfarb, Paschke, Pearlstein, Sayers, and more. Reception Friday, October 17, 6 to 9pm.

Tory Folliard Gallery: Open Lands - A Survey of Landscape Paintings
This biennial survey includes many of the Midwest's most celebrated landscape painters working today. Each one of these artists offers a unique and personal vision when capturing the large and vast Midwestern landscape. The approaches in style are as varied as each artist's intent; whether it's photo-realism, pointillism, or plein air painting, the landscape becomes an embodiment of the artist's view of the world. Featured artists: Ahzad Bogosian, Daniel Chaffee, Fred Easker, Harold Gregor, Kathy Hofmann, Keith Jacobshagen, Cathy Martin and James Winn and others.

Villa Terrace: Viking Bronzes to American Arts and Crafts
When two Danish immigrants settled in Edgerton, Wisconsin in 1903, they sought to create pottery that was new, yet resembled ancient works. They called it Norse Pottery. Norse Pottery reinterpreted antique Scandinavian pottery, combining it with Western and Oriental motifs. The pottery is covered in a matte, dark, metallic glaze. Exhibition September 24 through November 30.

Wisconsin's fastest growing arts organization, the Coalition of Photographic Arts, presents the 2nd Annual Regional Juried Exhibition. Artistic Director of the Minnesota Center for Photography, George Slade, juried this year's exhibition; selecting 60 photographs from 42 artists. Images in the show and provocative groupings of the work highlight photography's inherent multiplicity and the complexity of visual story-telling.
